Another air carrier is about to bite the dust. ATA Airlines just announced that they are shutting down operations and canceling flights.

ATA was once the tenth largest air carrier in America. This is the second time they’ve filed for bankruptcy in three years. They had about 50 flights a day, servicing Hawaii and four west coast cities — Oakland, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Around 2,200 employees will lose their jobs with ATA folding. The company said a loss of a key military charter business is one of the reasons they are discontinuing operations.

Other airlines are expected to help assist travelers holding tickets to fly with ATA.

Aloha Airlines Passenger Services Ending Today

March 31, 2008 – 5:19 am

61 years of flight service is coming to an end for Aloha Airlines based in Hawaii.

The company recently announced that today (March 31, 2008) will be the last day it will be operating its inter-island and transpacific passenger flight operations. Ticketholders for Aloha Airlines flights can either use another carrier or ask their travel agent/credit card company for a full refund.

“This is an incredibly dark day for Hawaii,” said David A. Banmiller, Aloha’s president and chief executive officer. “Despite the groundswell of support from the community and our elected officials, we simply ran out of time to find a qualified buyer or secure continued financing for our passenger business. We had no choice but to take this action.

‘We deeply regret the impact this will have on our dedicated employees who have made Aloha one of the best operating airlines in the country. Aloha Airlines was founded in 1946 to give Hawaii’s people a choice in inter-island air transportation. Unfortunately, unfair competition has
succeeded in driving us out of business, bringing to an end a 61-year-old company with a proud legacy of serving millions of travelers in the true spirit of Aloha.

“We realize that this comes as a devastating disappointment to our frequent flyers and our loyal business partners who have supported this company for many, many years.”

This closing will effect around 1,900 employees. Aloha will continue to operate as usual for their
air cargo and aviation services, while another buyer is sought through US Bankruptcy court.

Singapore Airlines To Offer First ‘All Business Class’ Flights From United States

March 4, 2008 – 6:53 am

Singapore Airlines recently announced that they’ll launch the first ever “all business class” flights from New York and Los Angeles to Singapore.

In order to do so, Singapore Airlines is converting five Airbus A340-500’s to accommodate 100 passengers. The new seats are 30 inches wide and convert into a flat bed, so passengers can catch a catnap while in the skies. All seats have access to an aisle, making movement around the cabin more convenient. These seats are already installed in Singapore Airlines A380 and B777-300ER fleet.

The upgrade of these planes will cause some minor disruption to service. To make the necessary
changes, there will be minor changes to their flight schedules. The existing daily Los Angeles to Singapore non-stop flight will not operate on Tuesdays between mid-May and late-June. There will be no change to New York service frequency.

Travelers that wish to fly economy class are advised to book an existing one stop flight.
