Canadians do not need a passport to cross into US by car and as far as I know, there are no requirements for US citizens to produce a passport when driving across the Canadian US border… yet. I understand that this will become a requirement sometime in 2008. Here is a link from a travel site thathas a summary, there are also links to the official gov’t sites.

What documents do you require to cross into America in a car? We’ve only needed our driver’s licenses, but we bring our birth certificates just in case.. We’ve never had an issue crossing the border into Canada.
