On January 23, 2007 new laws concerning international travel went into effect for all Americans.

Any American traveling by air to Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, Central America, South America or the Caribbean must have a passport to get on an airplane and to re-enter the United States of America. Persons without a passport will not be able to fly.

Documents like birth certificates, social security cards, or a driver’s license won’t gain you entry into your beloved homeland anymore. Even infants and children must have a passport.

For the time being a passport isn’t required for travel done by car to Canada and Mexico. Officials are expected to review this in June 2009.

If you’re looking to do any international travel via air, it’s time to stop at the closest Post Office with Passport services and order up! The cost is around $95.00.

    2. Yes, unfortunately a similar law is in effective for Canadians as well. It will not be as convenient for us to go across the boarder to South any more. :(

    3. Hi Jas.
      Thanks for commenting!

What documents do you require to cross into America in a car? We’ve only needed our driver’s licenses, but we bring our birth certificates just in case.. We’ve never had an issue crossing the border into Canada.

    4. Canadians do not need a passport to cross into US by car and as far as I know, there are no requirements for US citizens to produce a passport when driving across the Canadian US border… yet. I understand that this will become a requirement sometime in 2008. Here is a link from a travel site thathas a summary, there are also links to the official gov’t sites.

    5. Thanks for the information, Bob. I sort of thought it was about the same for Canadians entering into America , but I wasn’t positive.

      Thanks for the information!
