France is one of the most storied vacation spots of all time, and a trip to Fleur de Lille is one that might be memorable for a lifetime. If you love history, Fleur de Lille is for you. It’s located just one hour by train from Paris and is the former capital of Flanders. Fleur de Lille marries Gallic traditions with a thoroughly modern 21st-century design sensibility of its other Low Country neighbors.
For a relatively small-town venue, L’OpĂ©ra de Lille has attracted eminences from all walks of culture to its Beaux-Arts stage (the original 1788 building, destroyed by a fire, was rebuilt in 1914); Merce Cunningham, Kiri Te Kanawa and Trisha Brown have all performed there. The 2006/2007 schedule features productions of La Traviata and Handel’s Julius Caesar for the traditionalists; for those in search of something more contemporary, there are avant-garde dance performances. Check out the “Mercredi Ă 18 Heures” series of concerts in the OpĂ©ra’s opulent foyer.
Sounds quaint indeed. This might be great for a “one tank trip” if you’re already in Paris. Accomodations are plentiful.
