Here are 5 facts about Niagara Falls that you might not have known:
1. Niagara Falls was the first city to promote tourism in the early 1900’s. People would travel there to see the unsurpassed beauty of the area
and attend events such as tightrope walking by Jean Francois Gravelet, also known as Blondin who charged .25 cents to view his death defying walk across the falls. Other events
like viewing someone going over the falls in a barrel also drew crowds. Of the 15 people that attempted to go over the falls, 10 have survived.
The last attempt was made in 1995 and ended badly. Daredevils that attempt to go over the Falls these days face stiff fines and a permanent ban from Canada, if they survive.
2. The Maid of the Mist has operated their ferry service that goes under the Falls since 1846.
The first passengers only had to pay a dime to take the tour! Boats operate from both the American and Canadian side of the Falls. The first boat
leaves at 9:00 AM and the last one departs at 7:45 PM. No visit to Niagara is complete without this tour!
3. Nearly 12 million people visit Niagara Falls every year. It’s known as the “Honeymoon Capital of The World.” Couples and families flock here for the quaint charm of the tourist town. Visitors can enjoy the casinos, the Skywheel, wax museums, duty-free shopping, the botanical
gardens and other local attractions. The Journey Behind The Falls gives visitors a look from behind the falls.
4. Niagara Falls generates all the power for the city. They generate approximately 4.4 Gigawatts of power, and supply electricity to Buffalo, New York and other communities in the area.
5. Niagara Falls erodes about 1 foot per year due to the power of the water that flows over it. That means that the Falls are always changing, despite the fact that it looks the same. This is a significant decrease than the 3 feet it eroded before a water diversion was done in the 1950’s. The Horseshoe Falls send 600,000 gallons of water cascading into the 170 foot deep lake below every minute. The American and Bridal Falls sends 160,000 gallons per minute over the top.
Niagara Falls is a unique place to visit any time of the year. They illuminate the Falls every night and offer fireworks displays on Friday and Sunday nights as well as holidays. It is a special place that you’re sure to enjoy and comfortable walking shoes are a must.
