Travel for vegetarians - where to find food

August 13, 2006 – 2:43 pm

The world is not geared for vegetarians. Meat-eaters are the primary population, and restaurants make their money selling meat, so when you’re out and about travelling, you might run into trouble ordering. One big mistake I’ve learned: don’t just order a salad assuming it’s meatless.

Restaurants at salads seem to all contain meat these days. Caesar salad has bacon. I guess one choice you should be safe with is “Garden salad”, but you should probably double-check just to be sure. This phenomena isn’t unique to US travel only. Salad is getting meatier worldwide.

If the place you’re visiting has Indian cooking, you’ll probably be able to find a vegetarian dish. There’s a few things you can usually say about Indian cuisine: 1) There’s no waiting - the average person isn’t hip to the food yet and 2) The meals tend to be vegetarian and low calorie, as well as being cheap. I’ve had very good dining experiences on Indian cuisine on my last visits.

The main thing I’ve learned: just double check and all should be well.
