Travelling to Canada from the US by car

August 10, 2006 – 10:59 am

Going to Toronto or Niagra Falls from the US is quite easy. You won’t spend a ton of time at the border (depending on whether you have outstanding warrants or not), and the Canadians are very lenient in those areas about conversions.

There’s not a ton to know about crossing the border into Canada. Our neighbors to the north have made it easy. Present a valid Driver’s License, and you should have no problem. I had my birth certificate with me, but didn’t need it.

So don’t let thinking Canada is a foreign country dissuade you from going. It’s one of the easiest border crossings you’ll ever go through.

One thing was strange though. On our return trip from Toronto the first time we went, we didn’t pay a toll when we left Canada. A strange bill for $14 showed up from “ETR” later, so apparently they bill you after the fact.

In summary, here’s what you need to travel from the US to Canada by car

1) Valid ID (Driver’s License and Birth Certificate)
2) Money for tolls
