The city of Orlando and CSX have made an agreement to build a commuter train to help alleviate gridlock in the city best known for the abundance of amusement parks in the Sunshine State.

The project is expected to be funded by tax revenues and bonds that are split among federal, state and local governments. Under the deal, Florida has agreed to purchase 61 miles of rail and will help to improve and expand CSX freight lines west of Orlando.

Talk of a mass transit system has been going on for a few years, but plans for this rail system
look to be a go.

When this project is completed, it will connect the Amtrak station in DeLand in Volusia County and extend to south of Kissimmee in Osceola near central Florida’s theme parks. It will also be used to connect with proposed light rail and bus systems and is expected to begin operation in 2009.
