I think everyone likes ghost stories. And if you get a chance to travel to Montego Bay, Jamaica, you stand a great chance of having an encounter with one. I know I did. No, I don’t mean I saw a ghastly dramatic figure, but I sure did have a “sense” of something otherworldly happening at the Great Rose Hall.
The Great Rose Hall is an amazing place. It’s the work of one American businessman who really fell in love with Montego Bay, it’s inhabitants, and especially the stories he heard from locals about Annie Palmer, a cruel women if ever one existed. Without going into too many gory details, Annie Palmer was an extremely bad person to work for. She kept slaves in bear traps, and wouldn’t hesistate to murder ones who got out of hand. The slaves had no lover for Annie, either, but you’ll need to visit the Great Rose Hall to hear the rest of the story.
My ghost story? You’re taken to the 3rd floor of Rose Hall by your guide, and you can’t help but notice the creepy mirrors. As I passed by one in a hallway, I sensed a presence. I suddenly felt as if I couldn’t breathe. My wife indicated she had the same creepy feeling. The guide smiled and assured us that it happened all the time. Apparently more than one person had been murdered in that very room. If you get a chance to see this place, check it out. It’s an amazing testament to John Rollins’ drive that the place was so perfectly restored, and at great expense to him. This is a part of Jamaica’s history that just can’t be ignored.
