You need a card to leave the Dominican Republic

And you better not forget it. On our way out of the DR, the man at the airline terminal seemed perturbed when I told him I didn’t have my card to leave. He said “This is highly unusual. It means you cannot leave because you never came here in the first place.”

So I tell him: “Yes, I did come here. I’m standing here right now, so I must have arrived”. He looks up from his papers and says again: “This is highly unusual”.

I have visions of missing my plane, and I’m getting heated in the hot DR Sun. I tell him: “Since I’m a guest in your country, I can’t be expected to know every little thing about what cards I’m supposed to have. Maybe you ought to take it up with the guy whose job it is to hand out cards in the first place!”.

He looks again. Writes something down. Finally he says, “You can go, but you better remember your card next time”. I leave and think nothing of it.

A week later I’m cleaning up my wallet…what do I find? A card that says I entered the Dominican Republic. LOL, sorry dude…looks like you were right. For anyone going to the DR, make sure to tuck that card away for when you leave.
