If you’ve ever been frustrated after an airline lost your luggage, you’re in the good company of millions of others.
An estimated 30 million bags were temporarily lost by airlines in 2005, and 200,000 of those bags were never reunited with their owners, according to an industry report released Monday.
The report by SITA Inc., a company that provides technology solutions for the air transport industry, also noted that “the problem of mishandled baggage is worsening on both sides of the Atlantic.”
The 30 million misdirected bags comprised 1 percent of the 3 billion bags processed last year by airports, up from 0.7 percent in 2004, said SITA, which is promoting technology that it says would reduce the problem.
We’ve had this happen to us once before (when we visited the Dominican Republic) and it wasn’t fun. The airline did get us the lost bag promptly the next day, but it was an inconvience for sure. I made the mistake of packing separate bags for both my hubby and I, my bag didn’t show up. It had my bathroom stuff and most importantly, my warm weather clothes like my bathing suit.
Luckily a gift shop on premise saved the day. They had a very small selection of suits to choose from, so I picked the “best” looking bikini in my size that I could find. It wasn’t perfect, but at least it got me out of the jeans and sweatshirt I traveled in.
That is why it’s always a good idea to pack smart. If you have a carry on, pack a change of clothes just to be sure that your aren’t left stranded without a clean pair of skivvies. You can also pack luggage half and half. Make sure that both suitcases have a few items for both of you. This way the impact of losing your luggage isn’t so horrible.

yes, it’s a really big problem even with airline tags on your luggage you are still at risk of losing your bags. It’s why I created http://www.bagsreunited.com to help you find your bags if they get lost, you get a uniquely coded luggage tag that does not give your personal details away on the tag but allows you to be alerted by mobile text message and email if your lost item is found. Every time we reunite an owner with their lost item I know all the hard work getting the site created was worth it.
