Red Rock Canyon

March 9, 2006 – 7:31 am

While we were out west in Las Vegas we decided to take a break from the bright lights and big city to see The Red Rock Canyon.

I have never before witnessed such great beauty in what I referred to as an “alien landscape”. It’s nothing like the Strip. No lights, no buildings, no hotels.. just red mountains.

There is a visitor center (that regrettfully we didn’t stop at) that provides
visitors with history, conservation tips and information on the highly regarded desert tortoise. When “Max” makes his first appearance, spring has arrived. Entrance to the visitor center is included in the $5.00 car fee.

There are many other things to do while visiting Red Rock, if just driving by isn’t enough for you. There are several hiking trails of various difficulty levels, many places that rock climbing is allowed. Permits are required for all climbers. For more information on rock climbing permits call 702-515-5050 an leave the following information:
* Name and Address
* Type of Permit requested and Date of scheduled climb
* Vehicle description and License Plate information.
* Emergency Contact Information~ Name and Phone Number

If rock climbing isn’t for you, you can take advantage of the family and picnic area for an afternoon in the mountain and desert. There are no concessions sold anywhere on site, so be sure to pack your lunch! They also have a policy that you take your trash with you.

I enjoyed my time at Red Rock and hope to go back again soon.
I highly recommend this as something you must see.. you don’t find red mountains everywhere.

Photos never quite do justice, but here is one of my favorite shots from our visit.
