Taj Mahal Gets A Much Needed Facelift
January 11, 2007 – 6:15 am
The Taj Mahal is not your average building. It has been around for hundreds of years, and needs upkeep like anything else. Work has already begun on the weathered gates that guard entrance to the palace.
The Taj Mahal, built by Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, houses the graves of the Muslim emperor, his wife and other Mogul royalty.
The white marble-domed monument is among India’s most popular historical sites. Each year, about 3 million domestic and foreign tourists visits the world’s most famous monument to love.
The work on the gates is scheduled to be finished in March of 2007. The primary purpose was to restore detail to the artwork on the gates that has been in place since the 1700s. The Taj Mahal remains one of India’s major tourist attractions.
