Morro da Urca In Rio De Janeira Gets A High-tech Renovation

January 29, 2007 – 11:50 am

Morra Da Urca has been a well-known tourist destination for years. Places like this are known for their natural beauty and accessibility, and rarely, they are added to. Well the Morra da Urca soon will have a new structure added to it that has been designed by Nelson Fiedler, who is the quite famous creator of daring projects such as Rock in Rio and the famous Gloria Marina.

The cable car trip from Red Beach to Urca Mountain is the midway point for the ascent to Sugarloaf Mountain, one of Rio’s main attractions.
Fiedler’s structure will replace the small stores that have been built atop Urca Mountain, over the past 94 years. With a free span of 40 meters, the covered area, to be known as the “Espaco Baia de Guanabara”, will hold an art gallery, a food center and host small events. “The design is in harmony with nature,” states Fiedler, who took his inspiration from the shape of the Sugarloaf and Urca Mountains for this creation.

The structure is elegant, and seems to blend in with the current environment quite well, if you can judge by the illustrations.

The site is scheduled for completion prior to this year’s Pan Am games.
