Don’t Put Off Getting Your Passport
March 18, 2007 – 11:26 amIf you are planning any international travel and you don’t have your Passport in order, you’ll need to get moving!
The United States implemented a new Passport Law that requires all US citizens flying to another country to have a valid passport. Children are now required to have a passport to fly internationally as well.
This new law has caused a sudden surge in Passport applications that has inundated the State Department. Processing delays could cost travelers their entire vacation if they don’t have their passports before their plane is scheduled to take off. If you don’t have a passport, you don’t depart on a plane.
“Passport applications filed between October and March are up 44 percent from the same period a year ago, the department told lawmakers this week. In February alone, applications were up 25 percent.
Because of the glut, it could take 10 weeks instead of the usual six to process routine applications, according to the department. And expedited requests, which cost an extra $60 on top of the normal $97 fee, could take four weeks instead of two.
The State Department said it is working overtime to handle the load and hopes to have an additional 400 passport adjudicators by the end of next year.
So before you book a grand vacation faraway, be sure that you have passport so you can actually leave!
