Avis Car Rental To Offer Wireless Service

May 21, 2007 – 2:16 pm

Avis just announced that they are offering a new service to travelers. Wi-Fi for laptop internet access.

The new service, dubbed Avis Connect allows customers to connect to the internet with their laptop or other wireless device. It transmits a wi-fi signal that allows for concurrent connectivity and supports more than one device. It costs $10.95 a day and supplies a connection to the internet in the car, at your hotel room or even at the pool! (Oh the horror!)

The service debuts Monday at San Francisco International Airport and will continue to roll out in the coming weeks in San Jose, Calif., Los Angeles and Newark, N.J. It will be serviced by either Verizon Wireless or Sprint Nextel.

The service is provided through a portable device that was developed by Autonet Mobile, which pulls from existing wireless networks.

That sounds like a nice thing to offer before someone even arrives at their hotel. Avis Connect offers more flexibility than a connection in a hotel room. The price is also in line with what many hotels charge for a day’s worth of internet access, it is probably even cheaper in some hotels.

Would you choose roaming wi-fi over a static LAN in your room?
